Sleep and circadian rhythms: Key components in the regulation of energy metabolism

by Aaron D. Laposky, Joseph Bass, Akira Kohsaka and Fred W. Turek, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, United States

This review presents evidence to evaluate the hypothesis that sleep and circadian rhythms have direct impacts on energy metabolism, and represent important mechanisms underlying the major health epidemics of obesity and diabetes. The first part of this review will focus on studies that support the idea that sleep loss and obesity are "interacting epidemics." The second part will discuss recent evidence that the circadian clock system plays a fundamental role in energy metabolism at both the behavioral and molecular levels. These lines of research must be seen as in their infancy, but nevertheless, have provided a conceptual and experimental framework that potentially has great importance for understanding metabolic health and disease.

This review is included in a January 2008 thematic issue on Metabolic Diseases, guest-Edited by Laszlo Nagy and Peter Tontonoz.

NEW EDITOR: Noboru Mizushima

Professor Felix Wieland, Managing Editor of FEBS Letters is pleased to announce the editorial appointment of Professor Noboru Mizushima, Tokyo Medical and Dental University Graduate School to help deal with the increasing number of manuscripts in the area of autophagy.

We welcome him on board!

Molecular Oncology

7th Young Scientist Forum

The Young Scientist Forum (YSF) was initiated by FEBS in 2001 to provide Ph.D. students and young postdoctoral fellows of the FEBS Constituent Society with opportunities to meet, make friends as well as to discuss scientific affairs and career development in a friendly and informal atmosphere. Preceding the annual FEBS Congress, the YSF is traditionally organized by local Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows. During the course of years, the YSF has now developed from a satellite meeting into a real hallmark of the Annual FEBS Congress.

Since FEBS is dedicated to promote the interaction of students and young scientists, the Organizing Committee of the YSF2007 proudly announces that applicable fees will be covered for accepted participants. Furthermore, all YSF participants will receive a free registration to the subsequent 32nd FEBS Congress "Molecular Machines", July 7-12, in Vienna.

Datta Lecture Joan Massagué,
The Logic of TGF- beta signaling

Dr. Joan Massagué is Chairman of the Cancer Biology and Genetics Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Professor of Cell Biology at Cornell University Graduate School of Medical Sciences. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry (1978) from the University of Barcelona.

Dr. Massagué is interested in how growth factors, signaling pathways and gene expression programs control normal cell proliferation and cancer cell metastasis. A more recent subject he has been addressing is the problem of metastatic genes in breast cancer. He serves on the Editorial Board of Molecular Oncology.

The Datta Lectureship Award is awarded for outstanding achievement in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology or a related area. The award was set up in 1986 and is presented at each FEBS Meeting to a plenary lecturer from one of the 'FEBS' countries. Prakash S. Datta was the first Managing Editor of FEBS Letters (1968-1985) and Treasurer of FEBS (1964-1990). The Datta Medal is awarded in recognition of his many contributions.

RAPID? FEBS LETTERS JUST GOT FASTER!

FEBS Letters now posts accepted author's manuscripts online within 3-5 working days after receipt at the Publisher. This step further reduces overall publication time by a week. Please note the author's accepted manuscript is not yet type-set and proofread, and will clearly be marked as such. The author's manuscript will be superceded a week later by the uncorrected typesetter's proofs, followed by corrected proofs before being compiled in an issue. This routine makes FEBS Letters one of the fastest journals in the field.

Authors wishing to reference articles in press in reference lists can do so using the article's unique DOI number which is quoted on each article.

NLM's PubMed coverage has recently been improved with the inclusion of [EPub ahead of print] links to articles.
