FEBS Letters Young Group Leader Award

The FEBS Letters Young Group Leader Award is given to an independent scientist, aged 40 years or younger, who is the corresponding author of an outstanding research letter published in the previous calendar year.

2010 FEBS Letters Young Group Leader Award Winner:
Dr. Hideo Iwai
The University of Helisinki

The award winning manuscript is:

Oeemig, J.S. Aranko,A. S., Djupsjöbacka, J., Heinämäki, K., and Iwaï H. (2009) Solution structure of DnaE intein from Nostoc punctiforme: Structural basis for the design of a new split intein suitable for site-specific chemical modification. FEBS Lett. 583 1451-1456.

The manuscript was praised by the committee as it opens a new avenue into protein engineering. Based on NMR data and subsequent rational design, the authors characterised a minimal region sufficient to reconstitute a functional split intein. These findings open new possibilities for protein trans-splicing with short chemically modified peptides for numerous research and industrial applications.

The Award Committee were: Giulio Superti-Furga (Vienna) Chair, Pascale Zimmerman (Leuven), Ulrike Kutay (Zurich), Maurice Montal (San Diego) and Angel Nebreda (Madrid). We would like to thank them for their work in selecting the prize winner. If you would like to be considered for the FEBS Letters Award, submit your research letter to us before your 41st birthday!

Dr. Hideo Iwai
